This is the oldest known piece relating to the creation of the character of Darth Vader in the world. This cast of the mask sculpture by Brian Muir includes the back of the head. The traces of tools present on the clay sculpture are still visible. After approval of the mask, the talented sculptor used it as a basis to create the helmet.

 

Darth Vader's appearance evolved during the film's pre-production. Alex Tavoularis, Ralph McQuarrie, and John Mollo contributed many drawings and paintings until Brian Muir finalized the character on the move to 3D.
