Pavel Chekov's Starfleet officer original costume
When director Nicholas Meyer joined the production of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, he had some very specific ideas about what he wanted to see in the costumes. This should be Hornblower in outer space, and Starfleet's costumes must resemble those of the Navy, and not to 'pajamas' as in the first movie and TV series.
Meyer had one other, very significant instruction for Robert Fletcher. He wanted the costumes to be reminiscent of the clothes worn in the Douglas Faribanks Jr. movie The Prisoner of Zenda. The uniforms were redesigned by Fletcher.
The second movie-era uniform consists of a burgundy single-breasted jacket with a black stripe along a sealing mechanism. Meyer wanted a double-breasted jacket so that it would actually open, because he felt the lighter colour on the inside of the flap would frame the actors' faces better. And as Meyer always wanted the costumes to feel as much like real uniforms as possible, he asked for rank insignia.
