Superman Costume Original Sketch by Costume Designer Yvonne Blake
Original costume design sketch, accomplished in ink and watercolor on a 16 ½ in. x 23 ½ in. sheet of artist’s illustration paper, featuring the classic superhero costume for Superman. This design was executed before Christopher Reeve was cast in the title role, so the likeness of Superman is somewhat general. Costume notes at the lower right corner read “Leotard in shimmering blue two way stretch fabric worn over false muscles & harness for flying. Capes to be made in various flowing fashion for resting. Boots in glove leather or elastic with small heel. ‘S’ motif in red & gold on breast & again in all gold on back of cape. Gold metal belt with ‘S’ buckle.” Signed at the lower right corner, “Yvonne Blake - ‘76.” An iconic costume design, which was soon brought to life so memorably by Christopher Reeve!
It's written on the board : “Leotard in shimmering blue two-way stretch Helenca worn if necessary over false latex muscles and a flying harness. Cape in fine wool – (various fabrics to be experimented with for flying) ‘S’ to be appliquéd in yellow on the back of cape & inserted in the front. Trunks to have higher leg-line than in the comic. Belt and buckle in yellow patent leather & plastic. Boots in softest glove leather with concealed fastening.”
