Original Space Jockey Model by H.R. Giger

Nostromo's astronauts discover the source of the distress signal they picked up : a dead creature (named Space Jockey), pilot of a ship reduced to a wreck on a planetoid located outside of all commercial shipping routes…

The three explorers (Kane, Dallas and Lambert) studied the creature and the large circular room at the center of which it is located. They soon discover an opening in the floor leading to the ship's hold. Kane goes down. It's a mistake that he will pay dearly...

For creating this splendid and gigantic set, H.R. Giger, designer of the creatures of the film, originally completed visual concepts in two paintings.

The artist then create this mall size model. It allowed the team led by Chief Designer Michael Seymour to develop the set construction and to Ridley Scott to do his scouting and to manifest his specific needs in terms of drama.

Thus, it is children that are appearing as the astronauts in the final wide shot, wearing reduce size costume in order to maximize the size of the set. It also became unnecessary to build all the walls of the room. It was enough with the close set ups, to rotate the sculpture of the Space Jockey in the center of the room, to give the impression that the wall behind him covered 360 degrees ...
